Audiences and institutions essay

Question # 1
Marketing is extremely important in the filming industry. This is because marketing is arguably the only way to inform the public of an upcoming film. As a movie goer myself I can say that the only way I have ever found out about an upcoming film was through marketing for the film through advertisements such as previews in a movie theater or through commercials on the television. Even if a movie generates an audience without marketing, they will still have had a larger audience if they had used marketing.

One of the most popular ways that filming companies market their products is through social media. According to a case study on the movie Avengers Endgame, Disney, one of the most well-known production companies used marketing via Twitter to inform its customers on when new movies are going to be released or are in the works. Considering the fact that Avengers Endgame is the top grossing movie of all time it would be safe to assume that marketing techniques such as social media marketing are a valuable tool in the filming industry. When also looking at the fact that Disney and Universal, two of the largest filming conglomerates, use social media on a daily basis it is obvious that these techniques are important to them.

Next, we can look at Toy Story 3. According to an article on Disney’s marketing strategies, several YouTube videos that were made to advertise the movie Toy Story 3 generated “millions” of views. It is very likely that a large amount of the people who saw these videos also decided to go out and watch the film or at the very least tell other people about it. Here it is clear to see how marketing played an important part in generated a larger audience and more awareness for a film.

Moving away from technology marketing strategies, synergy between the different subsidiary companies in a conglomerate can generate more revenue for a movie. According to a case study about the DreamWorks movie Kung Fu Panda, one way that Universal marketed the movie was through the “Kung Fu Panda Ride” at Universal Studio Hollywood. I personally remember going on this ride when I was little on a vacation to California and wanting to see the movie afterwards. This is a good example of successful marketing to kids through the use of synergy. While this fact alone doesn’t prove that the film brought the movie a larger, it does show how more than one major filming company uses marketing for their films.

Despite this evidence, some people might use the argument that there are other important elements to the film industry that make marketing insignificant. According to an article titled “Universal is Disney’s Chief Rival Because it Isn’t trying to Be Disney” conglomerates like Universal have found success in balancing “modern market demands.” This means that focusing on an underdeveloped film genre can help studios optimize their revenue. For their argument they might use a case study on the box office hit movie, Hobbs and Shaw. Here Universal strays away from the superhero and animated movie genre and goes for a gangster/action movie.  While this movie is a good example of one way to generate a larger audience for a film, it does not prove that marketing is unimportant to the filming industry and is strategy would instead most likely be implemented along with different marketing strategies.

After analyzing the benefits of marketing and looking at examples of how marketing has been used in film I believe that without a doubt marketing is essential to the film industry. Through social media, viral marketing, and synergy filming companies have used marketing to generate millions of dollars in revenue. Although the filming industry oligopoly is changing and will continue to change, I think that it’s safe to say that marketing will remain an essential part of the business.

Game of Thrones Extract Practice

The director’s vision in this Game of Thrones extract was to show the viewers how the protagonist in this scene overcame an obstacle that was preventing him from being successful. In it he faces a challenge and even when it seems that he might fail he still persists. This vision is portrayed to the viewer with the different shots, angles, and mis en scene elements.

In the opening scene an aerial shot is used to show a ship that the two protagonists are traveling in to reach their destination which is the city of Bravos. The aerial shot of the sip gives the viewer a feeling of impending danger as the ship slowly makes its way into the city. Also in the opening scene, an establishing shot is used to show the city of Bravos when the ship has finally reached it. The establishing shot gives the viewer the feeling that an important point in the story is about to be reached.

In the second scene a long shot is used to show the protagonists waiting in the bank at Bravos. This shot gives the viewer a feeling of apprehension as they watch the episode and wait for the bankers to arrive. Another shot used in this scene was the two shot that showed the protagonists standing waiting for the arrival of the bankers. This shot gives the viewer an understanding for the characters’ impatience as they wait.

In the third scene an eye line match is used to show the bankers arriving from the main protagonist, Stannis’s, point of view. This ends the short but suspenseful wait for both the viewers and the characters for the bankers to arrive. After the eye line match, a shot reverse shot is used to show the conversation that is going on between the banker and Stannis along with the conversation between the banker and Davos Seaworth. The shot reverse shot finally shows the director's vision completed with Davos Seaworth overcoming the challenge by convincing the bankers to loan them money even after it seemed as though they wouldn’t.

In these three scenes the author uses an aerial shot and an establishing shot to give the sense of an upcoming challenge. They then use long shot and a two shot to give the viewer a feeling of anticipation for this challenge, and finally they use and eye line match and a shot reverse shot to show the challenge and how the characters overcome it. The author effectively uses these filming techniques to show his vision to the viewers.

CCR

For the CCR of my movie the most difficult part was finding time to film. Since I am out of school teachers have assigned me several assignments weekly. I had to find a way to balance filming with other work. I also had to work at a time that wouldn't disrupt my parent's work and my brother's online classes. These factors made it take around a week to finish the video, but if I didn't have these factors it might have taken an hour. When I did record the video I would read out the question then I would spend about two minutes answering it and I would include some footage from my movie. Then I would explain how the footage helped to answer my question. Using this system I was able to record over ten minutes of footage. After I made sure that I recorded enough film I started the editing process. For this I used the Filmora editing platform. In my opinion this is the best free editing software. The first technique that I used was the fade in and fade out technique. This gave a smooth transition between the questions. This is also a technique I used in my movie and I found it to be very effective. Also used a burn in and burn out techniques to transition between clips from the movie and the actual video. I used this because it felt like a more natural transition for the video. I also inserted the music that I used in the movie to explain how I followed conventions for my genre. I believe that with all the editing and recording that I used really payed off. This has been an amazing year and AICE Media is a great class that I would recommend to everyone. I am excited to turn this in and look forward to next year.

Movie Opener

Above is my movie. The last video that I filmed was this two minute opener to an action movie. Unlike my first video there were only two people in my group this time, me and Emiliano. We filmed at my house and the whole filming process only took an hour the first time. We did a lot of re shoots before we finally submitted it. Usually the re shoots focused on one scene and took about half an hour. Then we would edit it my laptop. Most of the editing sessions happened on my laptop because the school computers weren't working properly. This meant that we couldn't use the school's free editing software, pinnacle studios, and we had to find a different watermark free software. The one that I found was filmora, I personally think it's the best free editing software and that it was better than pinnacle studios. When the time came to edit it took way longer than the other two videos did. This is because we had over two minutes of footage and we had to place the clips in the proper order and then trim the video down to two minutes. I would say that the whole process took about four hours not including the re shot footage. We also had to do other schoolwork so it was hard to find time to work on the film. But in the end I think that we made an amazing film and I am really proud of what we accomplished.

Commercial

Above is my commercial. The first time I ever filmed a movie. For this project I worked with my friends Kathy, Amy and Emiliano. Our commercial is an advertisement for Gatorade. We chose three different Gatorade products to advertise when using our video. We used the drink, the chewables and the protein bar. We had each of the three actors consume one of the products while they performed an athletic activity. The first one was Kathy who was preparing for a track meet. Afterwards was me who was doing conditioning while eating a chewaable. The last one was Amy who was doing gymnastics after she ate an energy bar. Emiliano was the camera man for the commercial. Luckily we only had to shoot the movie once. We did run into problems during the editing process however. The entire class experienced computer problems for most of the week, but when we came back after the weekend they were working normally. Since this was my first video my acting wasn't as good as it was in my music video and movie but I think that I still had a decent performance. We also had to work around the fact that other filming groups were on the field to and at times, they got in the way of our filming. I think that the editing was the most complicated part, but once we figured out how to use the software it was easy. While I enjoyed filming the other two videos I think that this one was the most fun to film because we had a larger group and we got to film outside. I'm both excited and anxious to submit my work. Despite this I am confident that I have a good video. I look forward to receiving my grade in August.

Final editing

Today I did the final editing for my film. With all that has been going on for the past few weeks I wasn't able to film as much as I wanted to but I think that I did well with what I was able to use. As I have said in previous blogs I had to use my phone's camera to re shoot but luckily the quality of the video didn't drastically decrease. After each re shoot I would also re edit my video and I wouldn't sue all of the footage that I re shot because I would notice that some of the older videos were better. I repeated this process for this editing session as well. After this I used my storyboard to place each clip that I filmed in its proper order. Then I checked my storyboard again to make sure everything was in order. Then I watched the entire movie so that I could look for areas where the film can be trimmed so that the video isn't too long. I mainly trimmed out footage where the person holding the camera's finger might have gotten in the way or where the video quality was really bad. After I trimmed the video I had exactly two minutes of film. After this I moved on to adding transitions. The ones that I used the most were fade in and fade out. These were for the scenes were it switched from one room to another. The other transition I used was burn out, I used this near the end to give the impression that the entire opening was merely a memory or a dream. Once I was satisfied with my transitions I listened to the song I had chosen in my previous editing sessions to make sure that it was appropriate for the film. After listening to it I added it to the video and trimmed it so that it only lasted two minutes. Then I added titles to my film. I decided to use a yellow font and have the text in the center, then I checked my class notes and made sure that my titles were in the proper order. Finally I rendered my video and saved it to my computer and SD card. I'm very excited to submit it.

Reshoot

Since I have plenty of free time since I'm out of school I decided to do another reshoot. First I looked over my video and tried to find any footage with a flaw in it. I found a few with a couple different problems. Some of them were shaky. A few of them had bad acting. Then there were some where whoever was filming had accidentally put his finger in front of the camera. Since circumstances have changed since we last filmed I had to alter the way that I filmed the footage. I had to use my phone instead of an actual camera because I couldn't check one out from my school. The next thing I had to compensate for was Emi not being able to help me film because we are in lockdown at the moment, this required me to use books and other things to prop up my phone so that I could film. This also made the camera steady which fixed the scenes where the camera was shaking. In order to fix the scenes with bad acting I tried to make my movements more natural and tried to make my tone sound more realistic. I didn't change the filming angles and for most of the reshoot I strictly followed the storyboard. Except for the scene in my room when I didn't spend as much time on the prop. I did this because I already has two minutes and thirty seconds worth of footage and wanted to make it shorter. When I used the camera from my phone I expected a drop in quality but it actually stayed the same when I looked at the video. I'm sure if I had an I phone the quality would have been better. After I finished filming I emailed what I reshot to Emi. I made sure to tell him I was refilming so we were both on the same page. I hope that I will have a chance to go to school and submit this. Yet the prospect of going back to school doesn't seem likely so I will just have to continue learning from home.

More editing

Due to the extended break that I have due to Covid-19 I have decided to edit my video. As of the past two weeks I have been out of school and have been staying at home to avoid becoming sick. During this time I've been trying to find things to do to keep me occupied. I have caught up on schoolwork, exercised and read. Today I decided to spend my time perfecting my video. I did this several ways. First I cut unnecessary footage that made the video longer. I also cut out footage with bad picture quality. This improved the picture quality of the video and made it fit withing the time standards for Cambridge. But I didn't stop there. I also decided to check the titles that I used in the video. I changed the text font into something more interesting. I noticed that some were in the wrong order so I rearranged them. Next a made the text smaller so the viewer wouldn't be distracted from the main movie. These changes, in my opinion significantly improved the film. I also saved the video into the computer and my SD card just in case one is deleted. I researched the video to double check for any editing errors. And finally, I added new transitions so the video wouldn't look choppy. I hope that this situation in the world ends soon. However, as of now all I can do is try to stay productive.

New Reshoot

Today a re shot my video. Since most of my footage was already high quality we only re shot a few scenes. These were scenes where the camera wasn't steady or our movements were awkward. This made the video look more natural. Since we weren't able to check out a school camera we used an i phone to record. Ironically the i phone had better picture quality than the school's camera. But since we have a tripod that could hold an i phone we had to find a way to keep the camera steady. We did this by laying the camera on a pile of books. This made sure that it was steady and in an upright position. Partway through filming the phone ran out of battery. Since Emi didn't bring his phone charger with him we had to go to the apple store and buy a new one. When we were at the store we also saw some possible props that we could use to replace the ones from our last video. This made our video look more professional and realistic. Also in our last video we had my brother have a role in the video but in the re shoot we didn't. This is because his part would have made the video too long. Also to save time we made the final scene shorter by only including me walking to the door. The last time we shot it we included a long conversation before that. The final adjustment that we made was to film during the day. Last time we filmed at night which didn't make sense because the main character was supposed to be eating breakfast for the video. With the edits that we have made I feel confident that we have made an excellent video. I'm excited to submit my video and I hope that everyone reading this is healthy and safe.

Unable to edit

Today I did not have the opportunity to film or work. Due to the coronavirus outbreak in Florida school has been cancelled. This has been put into effect Nationwide. I was not able to check out a camera last week if I wanted to film. I will probably film my CCR through my phone. I also wasn't able to edit because I couldn't go to school. Fortunately, we saved our film on an SD card so we can edit it at home. We finished the during process for our film last week so now we just need to submit it. In order to submit it we need a school laptop and at least an hour to download it. Right now we are rewatching the video to make sure that we have properly edited and filmed it. We need to do this so we can download it to the computer the moment we come back to school. We also need to add title credits to the video. We will need to use our notes as reference and might have to download editing software to our computer to do this. Another thing we need to add is music. We are using royalty free music so we need to give credit to the website in the title sequence. As of now and next week we will try to stay healthy. By practicing proper hygiene and social distancing we should avoid charging this virus. Hopefully we will come back to school in time to take our AICE tests and submit our work. We are confident that we will have a good video to submit when we get back. And I am excited to get back to work.

Re editing

Yesterday we re edited our video. When we did this we used footage from both our original video and the one that we re shot. We re shot our film last weekend and added a few new shots. In addition to this we also improved some of them. When selected the video clips we used the ones that were less shaky. When we filmed last weekend we used a tripod to make sure that the camera was steady. Then we found a website for royalty free music. Then we used a rock and roll song that fit the vibe for our film. We used the music for most of the opening scenes of the movie. Then in the last thirty seconds we started the dialogue. We also added a fading away affect on the music. In our opinion, this made the film transition smoothly. We also added our titles in this editing session. This is something that we didn't do last time. We followed all the guidelines and made sure that our titles came in the proper order. We also spaced out or titles so that they were showing through most of the video. Finally we added transitions. We did this to stop our video from being choppy. I think that we made an amazing film. I greatly enjoyed working on this project.

Re shooting

Over the weekend we reshoot our video. Fortunately this did not take very long because we put in a lot of effort our first time filming. We reshoot the opening scene to make sure that the acting was good enough to post. We used the same costumes as before. We also used the same props as the first time. We used a tripod that I had at home to make the camera steady. This improved our video. However I believe it would have been fine without it. We did the reshoot on Sunday like before. It was a very enjoyable process. We also paid attention to the shots and angles we used. We made sure that we used all the required angles. We had a high and low angle like before. This time the tripod improved the quality. We also used an over the shoulder shot. We also used an action match which we didn't do before. Like I said before the tripod improved the quality of all of our shots. We also had less background noise than before which improved out audio. This time a think that our video's quality was greatly improved. We both enjoyed filming. We look forward to subitting our video.

Peer review

Yesterday we did our peer reviews. Me and Emi reviewed Angelo's video. The video I peer reviewed was very good. It was already edited. One of the recommendations I made was for him to make the video shorter because it was eleven seconds too long. His video was about a boy playing basketball. I think that he did a good job developing a story. I also like how he made the transitions clean and made the video flow well. Another thing that he should fix is his titles. He did not have enough and they were not in any order.

The next thing that I scrutinized about the video was the lighting. I think that the film was well lit but his choice of lighting filters should be changed. He used a green light filter which I think was confusing to the mood he was trying to create. For the sound effects I feel like some of the voices in the video were too faint. But I think that overall the digetic sound in the video was good. For nondigetic sound it was mainly basketballs hitting the ground and the volume was good. When I watched his video I could tell that he put effort when he made the sound effects. This was obvious by the clean and crisp sound that I heard. I could see this same effort with the lighting. Even though he used some bad filters he used them with good intentions.

Finally we looked at his shots and angles. Some angles and shots that he needed weren't in the video. When it came to angles he only had one that he needed which was a low angles. He did not have a high angle. For shots he used most of them except for a close up and over the shoulder. He also forgot to use a shot reverse shot. One thing that I liked about his video was his use of flashbacks to tell his story. One suggestion that I made was for him to add all of the missing shots and angles. Overall I believe that it was a good video. I think that what I learned here can be used in my own film.

filming pt 3

Today we were finally able to film. For the past two weeks we couldn't do this due to our schedules. Fortunately we had prepared for this and decided to film on this date. As we filmed we followed our script and storyboard which led to us creating a good video. Our location for filming was my house. We started filming at around one O' clock and finished at around two. This was shorter than we expected. We were able to film faster because our shots were good enough that we didn't need to reshoot. Next class our film will be edited by us. During this time it will also be peer reviewed by another group. As we filmed we used the shots and scenes that we wrote in the storyboard. We often reffered to this to decide what we would do. We used high angles, low angles, and bird's eye angles. We also used close up shots, long shots, and wide shots. I am confident that we made a good video today. Me Emiliano flawless acted out each scene. We were also creative with our filming props. We often used household objects like an oven and toaster. We also created our own props by drawing on a sheet of paper. And I think when we film tommorow it will only improve our movie. I also think that other groups peer reviewing our footage will give us valuable insight on how we can make our film better. We are both looking forward to Monday.

Filming Part 2

We weren't able to film this weekend. We have scheduled to film next weekend. Along with this I was also sick for most of the weekend with a cold. Our plan for filming has not changed. We will check out a camera this week. We will do this later in the week so we have more time before we need to return it. We will also do this with the tri pod. We won't need to take an SD card because Emiliano already owns one. Our filming location will be Andrew's house. We will film it on either Sunday or Saturday. The time for filming will be at around twelve pm on either of the days. Our plan for filming is still the same. Filming will be two hours give or take. We will film all ten scenes. We will also do retakes if they are necessary. If we don't need to do retakes the filming process will be significantly shorter. Last time our tripod wasn't working properly so in order to avoid this problem happening now we will open it and make sure it works before we take it home. Also when we check out the equipment we will each take a different item home. With these plans already in order I am confident that we will make a good video. We are both excited to start filming next week.

Filming movie

Unfortunately we weren't able to get a lot of filming completed. My partner and I agreed to film next week so we did not check out a camera or SD card. When we film next weekend we plan on finishing the film in about two hours. We already have an organized schedule and plan for filming. We will film at my house. We plan on starting at around one o' clock p.m on Saturday and will finish filming at around three o' clock. We will probably take around ten minutes per shot if we stick to the story board and planning. However, if we don't need to retake any shots then it can go by significantly faster. If we don't do any retakes we will probably finish in about on hour or less. The filming time of two hours is just a rough estimate. When we film we will need to check out a school camera. We will also check out an SD card and tripod. We will do this the day before we film so the time limit allows us to turn it in the next week. We probably split the filming equipment that each of us takes home so that it is harder for us to lose one item. Then the following week we will return everything that we checked out. The reason we couldn't film last weekend was because we both had important events that we could not miss. These events took up most of our day which stopped us from filming at any time. If we could have moved them we would have. But next Saturday we will film as planned. We are both excited to film.

Storyboard

Above here is our story board for our film. We used ten sheets to represent what will happen in each scene. We included camera angles, shots and a picture of what the scene will roughly look like. In the first scene we will show the main character making breakfast. In the second we will show a file that alludes to his profession. In the third will show him continue to make breakfast. Then after these scenes go back and forth we will show answer the door and then abruptly slam it. We have already outline the scenes, sounds in the film, and schedule in power points. I think that our film is well organized and interesting and will be enjoyable to watch. We both look forward to filming.

LSHP

Recently we have planned for how we will proceed to film our video. We went over where we will film it, the filming schedule, the health precautions and who will participate. Our location for filming will be at Andrew's house. Our schedule will start today with us planning out the process for filming. For health and safety we will keep our phones charged in case of an emergency. We will also have bottles of water to stay hydrated as we film. Our film will have two participants Andrew and Emiliano. Andrew will hold the camera and play one of the supporting characters. While Emiliano will be the main character. With the planning that we have now I think that we will make a great film and enjoy doing it.

Title Design

For our title sequence we will have over 20 title credits. They will also come in the standard order for Hollywood films. The first two have our names and the name of our production company. The next two are the actors names which will be Andrew Cambron and Emiliano Vallejo and the film title which is the Rival. The next three are who the film was casted by, music by and visual effects. Next are the caption designer and edited by. After this are the production designer and director of photography. The last four are the producer, story by, written by, and directed by. These titles will come in the order that I described them which complies with Hollywood standards. I look forward to filming this film.

Sound Script

The sound script for the opening scenes of this movie is simple. From scenes one through five the song Teddy Bear by Elvis will be playing. This song will give the movie an upbeat comedic tone. We chose this song because of its happy and upbeat mood. When scenes seven through ten start the story for the movie will be introduced. In scene seven the main character will be talking to someone so the main sound will be voices. In scene eight the main character will slam the door and this noise will be the main noise. Next the agent will begin to shout. Finally it will cut the main character eating breakfast and muffled shouting will be heard. We believe that this sound was the best suited for what we wanted to do and look forward to filming.

Shooting Script

This presentation shows how our film opening will play out visually. It shows the different camera angles, movements, and what the characters are doing in each scene. Scene one will show the main character open the stove and will use a long shot, mid shot, close up, and extreme close up. Scene two will show a view of the main character's room and then zoom in to a file that is on his desk. Scene 3 will show the character making coffee and will use a high angle, point of view shot, mid shot, and close up. Scene 4 will cut back too the main character's room and will use a high angle and insert. Scene 5 will go back to the kitchen and will use a long shot, mid shot and close up shot. Scene 6 will still be in the kitchen and will show him beginning to eat his breakfast and will use a long shot, close up and tracking shot. Scene 7 will show an agent waiting outside the door and will use a two shot, point of view shot and high angle. Scene 8 will show the agent talking to the main character and will use a point of view shot and an over the shoulder shot. Scene 9 will show the agent's reaction and will use a close up and action match. Scene 10 will show the main character finishing his breakfast and will use a mid shot and eye match.

Title Research (The Changeling)

There are 29 titles in the movie opening that all introduce the jobs and names of the people that worked on the movie. They also had the movie title appeared in the beginning. The main image is the main character. He is a man who I would think is in his 50s. We watch in the beginning that he is helping his family push a car down to a telephone booth where he calls someone to come help with their broken down car. Then we see him in walking down the street and coming out of work. The beginning brings the connotation of family and happiness. He connects with his family through pushing the car and that adds a togetherness to the movie. Then when he witnesses his family die, we see him gloomy and depressed and his mood sets the tone for the rest of the opening. Action movies usually introduce the characters in the beginning of the movie. Then we are given a glimpse into the story of the character and why he acts the way he does throughout the rest of the movie. Because he saw his family get hit by a truck and die in the beginning, he is gloomy and depressed in the rest of the movie. Normal action movies introduce their characters differently. In normal action movies there an intense animated opening scene that gives the name and job of each person and then those titles don't show up on the actual footage so they wouldn't take up room. The characters in normal action movies are introduced afterwards. More recently movies have been showing the titles at the end of the movies instead of the beginning. This is where I think this movie is very strong. The beginning sets a story that grasps your attention by setting a story that the audience wants to follow. They start the movie off with a traumatic event that will effect the main character for the rest of the film. The main technology used were the editing and camera angles. We got constant switching between the truck and the man in the phone booth and the instigating car to increase the intensity of the moment and keep the audience interested. They used camera angles to show how fast the truck was going and how the accident actually happened. They used a eagle eye angle to show that the instigating car caused the truck to spin out and crash into the Family who was playing with snow. They used technology very well considering the year this film was made in.

Title Research (The Avengers)

  • One image that stands out the most is the clouds. They are in the opening sequence every five seconds, they are then shown less frequently towards the end. The image was replaced with the weather pattern of a hurricane and the text start fading in and out in a spinning fashion. They spin in and out of the scene while being overlayed over the images of either clouds or hurricane patterns.
  • For the opening scene they had lots of titles which not only presented the jobs that lead to the creation of the film, but also gave the credit to the people that occupied the job. For example, the gave the music composer and conductor, Joel Mcneely credit for the work he did for the movie in the opening scene. In total, the opening scene for Avengers had 29 titles which each either introduced the movie workers or the companies that took part in the production of the film.
  • The connotations that these images carry is maybe the feeling of intensity or disaster. They are trying to point to the fact that in the movie is going to focus itself on a natural disaster or a hurricane to be more specific.
  • The action genre usually includes some intense moments that could be from a common factor or something that one person struggles with. In this case it’s going to be one common factor that impacts multiple people at a time. The fact that the images of hurricanes and black and stormy clouds could signify that they are going to eventually lead to an intense and possibly dangerous situation for the main character. We are going to see how the character deals with this problem that is potentially life threatening and that is a normal convention in action movies.
  • Normally in action openings you get hit with music that immediately begins with intensity to set the tone for the rest of the movie. Opening sequences also give you a glimpse into the characters that you are going to see in the movie; however, this movie doesn’t give any information about the characters and leaves you to wonder who it is that we could be following.  The music in this opening is also very mellow and not as intense as other action movies that I have seen. And the sounds of the ocean waves drowns out the actual music and doesn’t really fit the background.
  • The movie uses a few strategies in this opening scene to grasp their audience in. They make it something relatable. By choosing hurricanes and natural disasters to almost represent their movie, they allow the audience to almost connect to the movie and be able to apply it to their everyday lives. They also don’t spoil what kind of character we are going to follow leaving the audience to imagine who it is that the movie could be about.
  • They used editing very well in this opening scene. They did the overlay well and made sure that the text was always in-front of everything. Their color choice for the text was good, because otherwise it would blend in to the background and be illegible. The also used other technologies well, but the only thing I would complain about is the choice of transition. It looked choppy and personally wasn’t aesthetically pleasing.

Title Research (Green Lantern)

The title sequence for Green Lantern only had 30 titles. This number is way less than movies like D.No. In this title sequence gave credit to the actors, studio, musicians and producers. The most likely reason for the fewer titles was probably because there were fewer people involved in the movie. In the opening sequence we saw images of planets in outer space. These planets in these images are broken apart and scattered throughout space. Near the end of the title sequence the green lantern is shown. These images represent how the movie is related to space and aliens. The destruction of planets suggests that aliens might try to destroy earth in the movie. The green lantern symbol also suggests that the green lantern will defend the earth from the aliens. The genre is reinforced with several common movie conventions. The most noticeable one is the music which creates a feeling of energy among the audience. Next the movie uses images of destruction which contributes to the mood of an action movie. Finally the pace that the different images are shown in makes the audience excited for the movie. The film establishes in enigma in several ways. It first does this by creating a space atmosphere which isn’t common in action movies. It also uses a green tint which is contrary to the usually lighting in other movies. In order to make sure the film appeals to the target audience the creators impose a sense of nostalgia. This is done by making several references to the comic book the green lantern. In addition to this they use the green lantern symbol in the end of the opening sequence. Editing played a major role here. Without editing technology the green tint would not have been made. Also the images of planets were products computer generated images. Finally both high and low angles were used throughout.

Title Research (Dr.No)

The first opening sequence that I watched on watchthetitles.com was for Dr.No. As I watched the opening sequence I saw that there were 40 titles that popped up. In these titles they gave credit to the directors, actors and producers. The next thing I noticed where the pictures that went with the titles. At first it showed James Bond staring down the barrel of a gun then it started shown the titles with colored dots on a black background. This made up most of the opening sequence. As I saw these images I began to see what they meant. They were creating an action movie mood this was obvious from the opening scene where James Bond stared down the barrel of a gun. This use of dots on a black background creates a spy movie atmosphere as well.  The images that I saw clearly reinforce the genre of the movie. It does this by showing images that suggest there is danger and mystery. The music that plays in the background also proves this point. The opening sequence of the film breaks the common conventions of an action movie. They do this by showing images that aren't related to fighting for most of  the opening sequence. This images are instead related to mystery which is good for a spy movie. The opening sequence uses different strategies to appeal to their target audience. These strategies include using images of fighting and music that creates a sense of mystery. In the opening sequence editing wasn't used that much. Instead they used transitions like making the slides move down or to the left and they use high and low camera angles. Overall the title sequence keeps the target audience interested in the movie.

artofthetitles research

We chose this site because it was recommended by our media teacher, Ms. Marchionne. We used it to have example of what proper titles look like in the beginning of movies. We saw many different examples for many different kinds of genres. To find a specific genre, for example our genre, action, you just type in the genre in the top right and they give you a list of examples. They don't have new movies but the movies still properly represent action. We researched  the different kinds of titles that pop up during the opening scene. You see the actors names and all of the jobs that make up a movie. There's make up artists, directors, producers and many other jobs that are given titles in the beginning of a movie. We are given the names of each of the people involved in those jobs and they stay on the screen for no longer that 5 seconds each. The final title to pop up is the director and the first is usually the title of the movie itself. By just browsing around I learned how to navigate through the site. I also learned what to look for when searching for the titles. Using this site is going to be really easy. After navigating through it and using the website and all of its features I think this research is going to be made much simpler than having to go on YouTube or some other video platform to find the clips.

watch the titles Research

I sued this site to see how I should structure the title sequence for my movie. I learned how the credits for a movie are introduced and how to implement them with the the opening scenes. I looked at the title sequences for several movies including The Mummy, Dr. No, and Mission Impossible. I saw how the setting of the movie should be introduced with the opening credits.  I also learned how to introduce the opening credits for an action movie. This site was very user friendly and useful. I visited this sight. For the first title sequence that I looked at the mummy I saw ancient hieroglyphics and mummy's in their tombs with the credits over them. For the Mission impossible opening scenes I saw images of dynamite exploding and fighting images with the credits.  For Dr. No I saw spy related scenes and drawings of people with military uniforms. I learned here that I need to make the opening credits give the viewer an idea of what the movie will be about. I don't think that our opening credits will be as long as the ones we viewed so we won't have to use the same elements that were in the ones I saw. I found this website to be interactive and very useful for what I was doing. I think that using this website will help me to improve my movie. I look forward to filming

Generic Genre Research

Our previous movie genre that we researched was crime. We created a power point on this genre to  show the elements of the movie. Similar to action films crime movies have conflict and high stakes. It also uses low angles and close up shots. Its common sounds are a little bit different because they include handcuffs clicking. But they do share the sound of gunfire. It also uses low key lighting which portrays a sense of danger. It also uses the track and pan camera movement. This genre of film is very similar to the genre of our new movie which is action. I believe that it will have many of the elements of a common crime movie.

Genre Research (Avengers: End Game)

Avengers End Game was one of the most anticipated and now the most grossing movie of all time. It came out in 2019 and was the end of a story line that marvel has been building for over 10 years. This movie also had a variety of camera angles. There were long shots to capture the fight scene. There were establishing shots often because the characters moved around often and were in different parts of the universe all throughout the movie. The had over the shoulder shots for conversations which were also accompanied by close up shots to catch the actors reactions to events throughout the movie. They had incredible costumes like the Captain America costume and the Doctor Strange costume which were both very important characters during the movie. Those costumes made the characters pop out and made them unique. They had all kinds of lighting throughout the movie. They used dim lighting to set the mood like the world as under an apocalypse because it was. They set a tone of hopelessness with the lighting which was something that was really important. They used actors that portrayed the characters before. For example, they had Chris Hemsworth play Thor and Scarlett Johanson play Black Widow. Both actors have played those characters in the past and were essential to the storyline. Make-up was also very important. They needed make-up to make it seem like the characters have gone through a war and have been fighting so things like blood and dirt were imitated using make-up. They used lots of props as well. Most of the props were CGI however things like the Captain America shield and Thor’s Hammer switches on and off of being CGI and the actor actually holding it. The setting changes often throughout the film. They start in space and then finish in a ruined land on Earth that is given a strong feel of apocalyptic Earth. Common sound was the main theme of the Avengers, which was played whenever they had a big victory. They also used lots of CGI sounds like alien sounds and the opening of portals. This movie could not have been possible without the editing. They used editing for everything in the movie. They used it for when the heroes used their weapons, they used it to create the infamous antagonist Thanos. They also edited the scenes so there could be two Robert Downey Jrs on the screen at the same time. They also used editing to make characters like the Hulk, all of Thanos’ army, and like I said earlier, Thanos himself. This movie fits the description for an action movie in all of the elements necessary and has its own flare which makes it unique to any other action movies. It includes fight scenes, intense moments, a common antagonist, and two different parties fighting over something they don’t agree on. In this case we have fight scenes between our heroes and all of the villains of the movie like Thanos and his goons.  They include intense moments like the moment that Hawkeye was being chased by alien dogs who wanted to kill him for the infinity gauntlet. They had the evil villain Thanos who believed that clearing half of the population of the entire universe would better the living conditions for the remaining half. However, the heroes obviously didn’t like this so they fought to stop him. Elements that I liked was the fight scenes, especially the fight scene between Captain America and Thanos. Captain America used not only his shield but also Thor’s Hammer, something that shouldn't be able to be picked up besides those who are worthy. It was something really cool to see. Something I didn’t like is how some of the protagonists impacted the storyline. For example Captain Marvel lowered the intensity of the fight by entering the scene and basically winning the entire thing single handedly. Overall this still is one of my favorite movies and it fits the action genre perfectly.

Genre Research (Gemini Man)

Gemini Man is a movie about how a retired sharpshooter is now being attacked by a clone that the government made of him to remake his incredible shooting abilities. This is similar to what our film is going to be however, we didn’t see the movie before coming up with our idea for our film. Because the characters moved around a lot going from country to country, they always had establishing shots to show where the characters were. They also used close up shots during fights as well as long shots to capture their entire body while fighting. They used normal soldier costumes, they weren’t anything special. Most of the movie took place during the night, so they used dim lighting to highlight the characters and to set tones for the scene. They casted Will Smith as their main character and as well as some other actors like Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Benedict Wong as supporting characters. They used make up like blood and scrapes from fights to show the effects of those fights. Those used lots of prop guns and entire grocery stores during the movie. The setting switched often. They began in Georgia, they went to Colombia, traveled to two other continents and ended up back in Georgia. Common sound were gunshots and sounds to help build suspense as well as intense music to add to the tone of fights and intense moments. Editing was one of the most important factors of this movie. They needed to make Will Smith, a 51 year old actor, look like his 23 year old self. They used editing that I don’t know the name of to make it seem like 23 year old Will Smith was cast as one of the characters in the movie. When it came to the fight scenes between the two they also used editing to make it look cleaner and more realistic. Action movies always have the base elements that most of them follow regardless. This movie followed most of the elements that action movies usually have. For example, they had lots of conflict points like gun fights or fights in general. This movie had an abundance of those kinds of fights considering it was about an ex-marine who was the best in the world. Action movies also have a common enemy that everyone in the movie tries to defeat in this case it would be the leader of the Gemini Program who created the clone and lied to him and the clone eventually joined forces with our heroes and took him down. They also had one main character who was the main fighter and knew how to do everything that was needed in the movie. They were also related to soldiers and government which is also a reoccuring theme in action movies. The main element that I liked is something that is not conventional to regular action movies. I really liked the fact that they made the main character fight himself, literally. Usually in action movies they have the main character fight an expected enemy who plans to take over the world or something extreme like that. But in this case he was fighting a clone who was sent to kill him because the main character knew something that he shouldn’t have known. One element that I didn’t like is the predictability. Once the clone is introduced you can already see that they are going to join forces. Because ever since they first spoke to him they tried to convince him that the main character and the clone were the same person and it eventually got to the clones head and they joined forces, but it’s something you could see coming from very early on in the film. Over all this movie was action packed and exactly what you would expect from an action movie plus more.

Genre Research (Captain America: Civil War)

The movie Captain America: Civil War consistently used certain camera angles and shots. It used low angles in almost all of the fight scenes, usually just to give a different angle of the ongoing fight. Next the movie used a high angle mainly to show when one of the characters was approaching their destination. The movie used aerial shots to show the fight scene when a lot of people where involved. Finally medium shots were used whenever the characters were having a conversation or planning a battle. Costumes in the movie were mainly superhero costumes for the main characters and the extras had military uniforms or formal attire. The lighting in this movie was a little bit lower than bright which gave the movie a more high tech feeling. The actors in this movie where Scarlet Johansson, Robert Downy Jr, Tom Holland, Chris Evans, and Paul Rudd. Make up in this movie was used to give the characters a beaten down look after and during a fight scene. Props for this movie included superhero helmets, a shield with a star on it, and fake weapons. The setting of the movie was modern day Europe and America. The sounds in this movie where not uncommon in action movies. Gunfire could be heard in most of the scenes. Missiles being launched was also heard in several fight scenes. finally the sound of cars or motorcycles racing down a street was often heard. There where three editing techniques that where common in the movie. Graphic matches were used to show the location of projectile that where launched at a character. Next insert were used put emphasis on something that was being shown. Finally action matches were used to give a different angle in fight scenes which made the movie better visually. This movie followed the standard rules of the action genre. It used the standard plot structure of the main character being placed into several dangerous and action filled situations. It used common editing techniques like and action match and cross cutting. And it used shots like the long shot and high and low camera angles. I liked that the movie used editing techniques like graphics matches and cross cuts because these were necessary to make the scenes interesting. I also liked the costumes that were used because they were original but still fitting for an action movie. I also think that the use of high angles and aerial shots made the fight scenes more fun to watch. However I do believe that there were some things that could have been left out. I think that the mostly bright lighting in the film made the threat of the villain seem less significant. I also think that the setting of the film should have been focused more on one area rather than several countries. Also I think that the use of multiple major characters in one film made the main character, Captain America seen insignificant. Overall I think that this was a good action movie.

Genre Research (John Wick)

The movie John Wick uses a variety of camera angles. These include a high angle in the beginning of the film. A low angle is used when someone is on the ground looking up at the main character to show him as an authority figure. Next a dutch angle is usually used after a fight or an explosion to show that the character is disoriented. Finally a high angle is usually used to represent a security camera watching the main character.. In this movie the costumes included a normal outfit, a ski mask and dark suit for the home invaders in the beginning, and a suit and tie for several characters. The lighting in this movie was low which was probably used to represent danger. The main actor for this movie was Keanu Reeves. Make up was used in this movie to show cuts on bruises on people after a fight scene. Props in this movie included a baseball bat, a crowbar, and fake coins. The setting of this movie was modern day New York. The sounds in the movie are not uncommon in action movies. These sounds include punches and gunfire which are used in the fighting scenes. Other sounds that were used in this movie that aren't related to fighting include the noise of cars racing down a street and footsteps. Editing in the movie includes cross cutting which helps show what two different characters are doing at the same time. Action matches that show different views of the character that people in the movie can't see. Finally, fade in and fade outs which help transition from scene to scene. John Wick followed the common conventions of action movies in many ways. It did this by placing the main character in a dangerous situation with lots of fighting. It also uses the common editing techniques and camera angles. In addition to using common editing techniques it also used shots like point of view shots and long shots. The elements of the genre that this movie had that I liked included the jump cut and action matches because I think that they helped the movie move forward. I also liked how the movie had plenty of action scenes that kept it interesting. I also think that the use of point of view shots made it easier to connect with the main character. In addition to this I liked how the movie followed the convention of using long shots. I didn't like that the lighting was low I think that brighter lighting in some scenes would have improved the overall film. Also although I enjoyed the action scenes I feel like it became repetitive. I think that use of a formal for suit for John Wick was also contrary to the spirit of the movie. Overall I liked the movie. This movie will serve as an inspiration for our movie.

Genre of my pitch

The genre of our pitch is action. We chose action out of the two genres because I believe that an action film better fits the description of the movie. We believe this because our movie is about an assassin so danger and action will be an important part of the film. We also think that the common camera angles for action films are better suited for this movie. I also felt like the idea of a character changing as a person didn't match with the plot line of our movie. Although our film won't bring in all the elements of an action movie we believe that it is still more closely associated with that genre. We are both excited to film our movie.

Action and Adventure Genre Research

Our new film for AICE Media fits the description of both an action and and adventure movie so we researched both genres. We did this to see what the key elements were for each one. This will allow us to properly film our movie. It will also let us know which conventions we might break in order to make our film unique.

In action films long shots and extreme long shots are used to make the subject look smaller than the location making them look unfamiliar. Medium long shots and two or three shots are often used in action movies to introduce the characters and include them all in one shot. In action movies costumes can range from a normal outfit, a suit and tie, high tech gear, and mid evil night costumes.  Action films typically have low key lighting to represent danger but can also have bright lighting if the director wants to add a comedic element to the film. The actors for action movies can vary but they usually have well known actors taking a lead role and less known actors taking a supporting role. Makeup varies with the film in certain films such as alien movies makeup that that will change the color of the face will be used and in war movies makeup that will make the character look dirty or tired might be used. For props most action movies will have fake weapons and use equipment like binoculars and smartphones. The setting for action movies can range from an urban city, small towns, nations, and different planets.

Common editing for action films include fade in and fade out effects along with burn in and burn out effects. Also in cases where the a certain scene was filmed during the day but the director wants it to look like it was filmed at night they can change the lighting through editing. Editing in action films will also often cut to the actors faces to show the emotion of the film. The common elements of an action film include a series of events that will lead the character into thrilling situations that include fighting and danger actions films will usually have one major protagonist and a villain that they must defeat. Examples of action films include Mission impossible, Inception, and John Wick. Common sounds in Action films are explosions and fighting noises. Elements of action films that I like are the thrilling plot and the suspense and danger. Elements that I don't like are the use of two shots and three shots.

Adventure films are similar to action films in certain ways. Adventure films use long shots, medium long shots and three shots. Costumes will also change depending on the movie and can be anything from hiking clothes to sci fi or high tech military clothes. The lighting in adventure films tends to be bright. Actors for adventure films can have any body type or gender and their popularity is not a factor. Make up usually isn't used in action films unless they are in a forest or outer space setting where they have to look dirty or nonhuman. For props adventure movies may use walking sticks, fake swords, and compasses. The setting for adventure movies is usually an area outside of a large city and can be in modern times or in the future and past. Like action movies editing includes cuts to the face along with fade in and fade out effects. The elements of an adventure film include a protagonist and a location that he must reach, during his adventure he will face obstacles such as enemies and natural obstructions and in the end he will come out a better person. Examples of adventure films include The Hobbit, Jason Borne, and Star Wars. I like the element of an adventure film where the main character is changed as a person from the experience. I don't like the bright lighting in the film and I think that dark lighting would help give it a feeling of suspense.
