First day of filming Blog

Yesterday I went down to the track field to film my commercial. Before I went down to film I grabbed a camera and a tripod that was provided by the school. Then I went to the bathroom to change into athletic clothes because I was filming a Gatorade commercial. I changed into sneakers, red gym shorts, and a white t shirt. When I got to the track field a lot of people were also walking in that area so I had to wait before I could film. While I was waiting I inserted the SD card into the camera and then I attached the camera to the tripod and made sure that it was secure. After I secured the camera to the tripod I made sure all of the Gatorade products were there. For the commercial I used Gatorade chewables, protein bars, and bottles. After that I made sure that I had all of the sports equipment that I needed. For this commercial we were using a football. By then the track field was clear enough to begin filming.

First I filmed a sprinter running and then drinking a Gatorade bottle. For this we first filmed Katherine going into a sprinting position. We did this by using a low angle and a wide shot. After a few shots I had a final shot. Next I was filmed preparing to and then performing push ups. First I was filmed performing several stretches to get prepared. Then I was filmed performing a push up and then taking a break to eat a Gatorade chewable. My part was filmed in the grass that the track field surrounded. We also had to take time to find which areas had the best lighting. During our next class we will finish filming.

Before we left we also filmed Amy doing a handstand in the grass. Then we went back to the class to dump our data. When I arrived I had to wait for an open computer because we arrived later than some of the other groups. Then we took the SD card out of the camera and transferred the data to a USB. Then I plugged the USB into the computer and opened a new file to place my footage. I then opened the file to make sure that the data was there and took the USB out of the computer. It is always advisable to dump your footage otherwise it could get deleted off the SD card. After this I returned the SD card, camera and tripod to their compartments. I think that by next class we will have finished the filming stage of the commercial. I can then start the editing process to create the final product.

Storyboard, Camera Movement, and Angles

Today in media we worked on our storyboard for our commercial. In a storyboard each slide is 6 seconds. And our commercial must be 30 seconds so we need 5 slides. We draw what is going to happen in each set of 6 seconds for each slide. Below the slide there are lines for us to explain what is going on. We will write what the person in the slide is doing and then we write the camera angles and movement. There are different types of camera movement. The main ones that we will use are pan and tilt. The angles that we will use are low angles, high angle, and medium angle. The shots the we will use are long shot, medium shot, medium long shot, and wide shot.

In our video our storyboard begins with a wide shot of a girl in a sprinting position. Our next slide will show a boy with a football in his hands in a fetal position. Our third slide will show a boy stretching his arms he is about to perform push-ups. We will then show the three athletes consuming different Gatorade products in a split screen. We will then use another split screen with a voice over saying the three traits that each athlete represents. Finally we will have our last slide be a title screen with the word Gatorade. Our first 18 seconds will show the three athletes preparing for there activity and the last three will show how they represent the Gatorade brand. We will use a variety of camera angles, movements and shots. Gatorade is a sports drink and this is why we our actors are performing athletic activities. We will start filming in two days.

Our angles include low and medium. We will use wide shots, medium wide shots, long shots, and an establishing shot. I look forward to starting this film.

Editing Lesson Blog

In order to film we will be given cameras. These cameras will come fully charged and will have a strap for our hand. They take a while to charge but hold their charge for a while. These cameras turn on the moment they are opened and turn off when closed.

Along with the camera we will also recieve a tri - pod. The camera is attached to the tri pod with a loose screw. This will make the camera unstable which is why it can be tightened with a knob that is on the camera. This will make our video look more proffesional. The tri- pod also comes with a crank that can elevate the camera. in order to remove the camera from the tri - pod you simply unscrew it from the tru pod. It is unadvisable to carry the tripod when it is open or when the camera is attatched to it.

In order to edit our footagw we need to make a folder for it on our desktop. We move the footage from our sd card to the folder. In order to find the pictures that we took we go to DCIM on our desktop. If our photos aren't on DCIM we can go to AVCHD, click on private then stream and all the photos that have been taken will be there but they won't be organized. You should always see if your photos are on DCIM before checking AVCHD. The process is called dumping

In order to edit our footage we log onto pinnacle studios and click on edit. If there is a tutorial video on there then we can click on new project. We then import our footage from the computer desktop to pinnacle studios. After this all the raw footage can be seen on the top of the page. Then we can start editing.

Now there are certain terms related to this process that we learned. There are 3 tracks were we place our media in. AV track 1 is for titles. AV track 2 is for film. And AV track 3 is for music.  In order to split a film clip you hit the razor blade button. The term exporting is taking footage out of pinnacle studios and importing is putting it into pinnacle studios

This is an overview of the process for making our commercial. When we are finished we will render our footage and make sure that it all runs smoothly I look forward to making this commericial.

Planning Blog for Gatorade Commercial

Today in media we made a blog on blogger pertaining to the planning of our commercial. We will be working on this commercial next week. We made a script for our commercial along with a back up plan and a list of our props. We will make this commercial  in the track field. We look forward to working on the commercial.

PROPS
For props, athletes will each have different items in their surroundings that contribute to their training/exercise. General props that could be used in any situation would include towels used to wipe off sweat, a watch to time speed, a bag that would be assumed to contain sports equipment, and any actual equipment that would be needed to clearly demonstrate the message. After brainstorming for how our Gatorade commercial should be set up, my group has decided that there would be different elements that would accentuate the concept that Gatorade improves athletic performance and refreshes those who consume it. Gatorade is a company that produces multiple products and we’d like to promote three of them to highlight variety. Furthermore, the essential props needed for the commercial would be the three different Gatorade products being the sports drink, chewables, and an energy bar that each athlete would eat after their exercise.

COSTUMES
As for costumes, the three athletes presented would be wearing fitness clothing that allows them to be comfortable as they train. The clothing is meant to be conventional to show that anyone is able to exercise without feeling pressurized into fitting into any “stereotypes” where clothes need to fit specific measurements, or shoes need to have a brand, or that without talent, one cannot succeed. The diverse clothing is meant to stimulate that message and produce a feeling of inclusion that would be remembered when one thinks of Gatorade. Additionally, vibrant colors may be used to contrast the athlete from the environment and ensure that he/she stands out.

SCHEDULE
  • 10/11/2019- We created the planning blog pertaining to everything that we need to have in the commercial, such as props and costumes as well as timing and places in which we are going to shoot the film.
  • 10/15/2019- We are going to create the storyboard for our commercial, finish it that day and get it approved as well. From there, we want to move on and potentially start recording.
  • 10/22/2019- We are going to start recording on this day. We are going to make our way to the track and begin shooting our scenes with our actors, props, and costumes.
  • 10/24/2019- We are going to edit our video and make our blog explaining our editing process and what each member did to contribute to that process.

LOCATION LIST
This commercial is to be filmed during 9:20am to 10:50am where sunlight is normally plentiful and strong, which would allow for better clarity. All athletes would be exercising on the track. One would be running, another would be throwing a football, and another would be doing doing a push up. The person who is running will be doing so on the actual track. The person throwing a football will be doing so in the center of the football field. The person doing the push ups will be doing so on the track near the shed.

BACK-UP PLAN
In the case where the weather of the day that the commercial is being filmed is stormy, the scenes would most likely be filmed on concrete under metal roofs where rain is not a conflict. However, if weather permits and there is light rain, the athletes can proceed to train on the track. Many times, when commercials are filmed under tough circumstances, such as rain, it motivates the audience and shows them that one can persist even the strongest of forces.

Research Conventions and Codes

The commercial that our group decided to do is for the promotion of Gatorade. In most Gatorade commercials, you have athletes training or doing sports. The Gatorade usually refreshes the athlete and is implied to influence his/her good performance after a long and extraneous workout. The Gatorade bottle is usually full and can be multiple different colors depending on what they're trying to sell. The bottle is normally wet from condensation to add to the feeling of refreshment to the product. Gatorade also sells energy bars and chewables, which provides a variety of products for athletes to choose from.
Usually, a Gatorade commercial has bright lighting if it's outside or dim lighting if it's in a gym to highlight the athlete and the product. It's either in a gymnasium or outside on a field. There is usually a crowd in the background making noise to add to the environment of the scene. The athlete takes a break from his exercise to consume the product and then comes back into his exercise renewed and refreshed or consumes Gatorade after a won competition to provide a reasoning for a great performance.
Overall, the main message of any Gatorade commercial is to ensure that the audience is aware that Gatorade can essentially better any athletic accomplishment.

Conventions of Gatorade commercials:
  • Athletes
  • Workout materials
  • Track
  • Gym
  • Bright lighting
  • Dim lighting

My name is Andrew and I am a sophomore at FLHS. I am currently enrolled in the pre - law magnet at FLHS but I am also going to receive my AICE diploma. My classes are Executive Internship, AICE media studies, AICE thinking skills, AICE English, algebra 2, chemistry and AICE european history. In Executive Internship we do mick trials so we can gain practical knowledge on how to be lawyers and witnesses. In AICE media we learn about the film making process and the techniques that are used to make movies. In AICE thinking skills we learn how to approach problems that require us to use critical thinking skills. In AICE English we learn how to properly read a story. In algebra 2 we learn new math concepts. In chemistry we learn about how mass reacts with other atoms. In European history we learn about the major historical events of Europe.

I am a member of the swim team at FLHS and after school I usually go to swim practice. On Tuesdays however, I go to environmental club where we help keep our school clean by cleaning out the recycling bins around our school. After I am finished with either practice or environmental club I take the activity bus home, I usually get home at around 6:00 pm. When swim season ends I join the water polo team where I will be a starting player and a team captain. One of my friends is also in the process of starting a club to help out people in the Bahamas who were affected by hurricane Dorian and I will join this club when it gets approved.

I listen to a wide variety of music and my favorite artists are Juice wrld, Kodak Black, J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Owl City, Billy Joel, and Ed Sheeran. My favorite TV shows are family guy, That 70's show and South Park. And my favorite book series is the Harry Potter series. When I graduate high school I plan on going to college to become a lawyer in civil law.
